between the shadow and the soul
Film, Poetry, Video
Like many Americans, I grew up fascinated with my ancestry. Raised in a southern culture I felt estranged from, my Scottish heritage was something I clung to. However, when visiting Scotland, I was confronted by the reality that I did not belong. In an attempt to find acceptance and belonging both within and outside of myself and confronting what home and culture mean to me, I engage with the land and mythology of Scotland and Tennessee. Using ritualistic movement, poetry, and self-portraiture, I ask these places of heritage and memory: Will you welcome me? Can I belong to you? Can we find our moments of intersection?
